Types of Earphones In 2020 And Beyond [Explained]

Earphones are something that has become a part of our day to day lives. But, there seems to be a lot of misconception about it. The market is flooded with earphones, and at times it becomes quite a daunting task to figure out which one will best suit your needs.

So, we decided to give you a better idea of earphones. Not only will this broaden your knowledge, but it will also help you decide to choose the best products. Before we talk about technicalities, do you know how many kinds of earphones we have as of now?

Sounds a bit odd-ball, right? Honestly, searching “earphones” will pop-up dozens of products which ultimately increases your confusion. Music, travel, gaming, corporate – there are many uses of earphones. Similarly, there are different types of earphones specifically designed to cater to individual needs.

Yes, you can choose a costly pair of earphones (or an extremely cheap set). But does it address your requirements? So, to help you make an informed choice, let’s help you understand the different types of earphones.

The Different Types of Earphones

Earphones are earphones – what difference does it make? As mentioned, there are different types of earphones. All of these come in different sizes and designs. And, each performs differently.

You can find high-quality items under each category. As a matter of fact, most of these types do not massively vary in terms of sound, frequency, bass, and other features. This is also one of the common reasons behind the misconception.

Just to be clear, earphones are different from headphones. Earphones are designed to be entered inside the ear. One can use it while jogging, walking, or even at the gym. It doesn’t sweat or feel irritated during long hours of use.

So, without further ado, let’s get into it. Listed below are the different types of earphones. We’ll tell you details about each of these, so you know exactly what to choose the next time.

  • In-ear
  • Wireless
  • Mixed Fitting
  • Neck Band
  • Earbuds

In-Ear Earphones

Canal phones or in-ear monitors (IEMs) are also called in-ear earphones. They are called so because their tips are inserted into the ears. They directly channel sounds into the eardrums and are quite successful as such. Such types of earphones are small in size and are therefore ideal for on-the-go use.

The best wired, in-ear devices offer a great listening experience by blocking the outside world and channeling sweet sounds into your ears–and there are many excellent examples. This type of in-ear bud may no longer be at the cutting edge of design or technology, but it still provides incredible efficiency and value.

The best thing about in-ear earphones is probably the ability to wear them discreetly. Interestingly, in-ear earphones appear to be the cheapest on average of the three styles of earphones, which doesn’t mean you can’t get expensive ones if you want. You will probably find in-ear earphones for less than a hundred rupees in your local store, and a cheap pair can serve a purpose in most situations.

The only drawback with in-ears is that it can be very uncomfortable to wear for extended periods of time, making it difficult to use every day. Many pairs of in-ears are going to fit you perfectly and some may not, occasionally be causing them to fall out, which can be extremely irritating.

Wireless Bluetooth Earphones

Wired earphones can be a problem at times. Especially for runners, as the wires can flop around, causing it to not stay put. It covers a wider radius and offers better mobility. Moreover, wireless earphones remove frequent problems like getting tangled or disconnection within the wires. Everyone hates earphones that work loop-sided.

The fact that almost all of them are compatible with devices powered by Bluetooth is one of the best attributes of wireless earphones. It means that if you find various devices that can connect to Bluetooth, such as laptops, cell phones, etc., your wireless earphones will most likely also be able to connect to them.

Your mobile battery is also rapidly depleted by using normal earphones. But if you’re using wireless earphones, your smartphone battery won’t drain fast as these already have a small battery so you can enjoy it without any trouble.

Bluetooth earphones attach to your smartphone wirelessly. There are 2 Bluetooth earphone types: fully wireless earbuds and short-cable Bluetooth earbuds. The latter has been on the market for years. Although they are not completely wireless because there is a short cord connected to 2 earbuds, they have been a pioneering collection of earbuds. Bluetooth earbuds today do not stand out in terms of music and calls from the competition, but they are designed with additional fitness features such as heart rate monitoring, oxygen consumption, size, and more. Such earbuds are often referred to as wearables or intelligent earbuds. In this group, large companies have produced excellent products.

Sadly, since most of these wireless earphones have several different impressive features, the price may be higher than with wired earphones you’re normally used to. These earphones, however, once again contain more beneficial features such as high-quality sound, a form-fitting design, and a sleeker overall look.

Neckband Earphones

Behind – the-neck earphones are a common headphone design featuring a support band that wraps like a collar around the back of the neck. These are stylish, smart, and realistic, perfect for a variety of situations, from hectic workplaces to home relaxation.

Neckband earphones (often referred to as retractable Bluetooth headsets) fill the gap between Bluetooth earbuds and wired earbuds behind the neck by providing ease of use and long battery life that other designs are unable to give.

They have two earbuds connected to a neckband that houses internal components as well as allowing the earbuds to swing freely and are retractable when not in use to keep them stored neatly.

So you’re not going to have to worry about losing the earphones. Some of these neckband sets can impress audiophiles in terms of sound quality and have call quality that outperforms other types of earphones. Some outstanding features of neckband earphones are instant accessibility with minimal discomfort or inconvenience; better access to controls; better portability than full-size headphones; better battery life and noise cancelation than many earphones.

Truly Wireless Earphones

Truly wireless earphones are tiny buds that sit in your ear canals and communicate with your phone via Bluetooth, one of the smallest options available. Apple’s AirPods are the truly wireless earphones that are best known, but there are plenty of non-Apple options.

The first thing you should know is quite obvious: there are actually different “wireless” and “true wireless” earphones. The important distinction is that there is no cable or connector between the earpieces for “true wireless” earphones.

Convenience, easy access, and quick pairing with other devices are some of the notable benefits of truly wireless earphones. One of the main reasons people choose to purchase true wireless earphones is to remove the inconvenience of changing wires when working out and being attached to a computer. Many real wireless earphones are ideal for exercise and to some degree water-and sweat-resistant. This means that you can put down your device, listen to music, and enjoy the freedom to roam and move around.

Mixed Fitting Earphones

This type of earphones is a mixture of in-ear and earbuds, which vary on the requirements of the user. Other than providing passive noise reduction, you will get complete control over the sound feature. It caters to the music fanatics.

Complete portability, flexible design, easier to wear (and remove) when working out, increased sweat resistance, and their small size ensures that some full-sized earphones do not trap heat.

Bone Conduction Earphones

This is a new variant and currently in beta mode. These earphones are not even going into your ears. Earphones with bone-conduction send signals to your eardrums through the bones in your skull. So what, besides being a cool new toy, is the point of these? Okay, without blocking the ambient sound, these earphones let you enjoy your music.

There are still a few bugs to work out as cool as the idea of bone-conduction earphones is. The biggest problem is the consistency of the recording, which still has to suit its conventional brethren.

To put it simply, earbuds are a lightweight alternative to earphones that are more pleasurable and definitely more accessible. An earbud at street level would cost a fraction of the price of what a headphone at home level would cost. Just as there are many different types of headphones, there are many types of earphones.

There are flat earbuds sitting on the tip of your ear, earbuds that are in-ear-canal, and earbuds that are noise-insulating. There seems to be more and more earbuds available on the market as each year passes.

Earbuds do not necessarily have cushions, but some do. These are meant to be held in place by the concha ridge in the middle of your outer ear instead of lying inside the ear canal. Often they are one-size-fits-all, which may not be easy to wear.

There are various earbud levels: medium, mid, middle, upper and bottom. The thing that separates the different levels of the earbud is not just the size, but each earbud’s drivers. Generally speaking, the more drivers an earbud has, the higher the level.

Earbuds are more comfortable than headphones. If you work out, jog a mile, or even if you don’t want other people to notice them, you should wear earbuds. There is the possibility of losing contact between your ear and the device itself when wearing headphones. You reduce this difference by using earbuds; as a result, you will have a better sound range.

Earphones Based on Use

Now that you have a broader idea of earphones, let us tell you about the earphones based on your overall usage. Your choice of earphones is heavily reliant on your desired usage, such as traveling, exercise, music, work, etc.

For Work

Earbuds can be used in the workplace if the surrounding environment needs to be tuned. Most earbuds now have a microphone, which means that you can make isolated calls. You’ll be able to hear the other person clearly even in a noisy setting.

In fact, if you want to enjoy personal audio, you should take one of the earbuds out of your ear, but at the same time, you can.

For Exercise and Sports

One of the main advantages of earbuds is that they are smaller and that they make a comfortable fit. It ensures that they are ideal for sports and exercise because during frenzied movements they won’t be dislodged. You might be sprinting or playing basketball, for example, and the earbuds won’t get loose.

For Health

Through processing information from your ears, the biometric earphones track the heart rate. Such earphones feed your audio signals as well. To record your workout, you won’t need any other gadget. These earphones are compatible with your fitness devices for Android or iOS.

For Music

In-ear earphones provide unparalleled sound quality. The isolating ear cups block the external noise and increase the response of the bass.

Tiny microphones are used to capture ambient sound by the noise-canceling function. Then these sounds are reflected in the speakers’ output. To create a barrier between the surrounding sounds and your ears, the sound-isolating feature uses a specific material.

For Travel

Earphones are lightweight and quite portable. It is equipped with characteristics of noise-canceling and sound-isolation. It’s easy to fold. For the purpose of travel, a wireless earphone is more suitable. On the earpiece itself, it has automatic volume control and mics.

For the earphones that suit your style, you might have a craving now. But don’t forget to check before purchasing the high-quality sound, the comfortable fit, and the earphone brand. For this decade’s earphones, you’ll find a range of sizes, types, and labels.

Not all earphones and earbuds are created equally, so before you rule out either choice, you should experiment with different styles. When audio quality is your top priority, you’re going to want to invest in some heavy-duty earphones.
